The school is located in an urban area but most of our pupils come from the neighbouring villages which lie in a rather deprived area as it has suffered economic decline due to unemployment. The area also has a poor living standard, low adult literacy and low aspirations. Only a small percentage of adults have further education qualifications. The average annual income per family is rather small so the pupils commute to school as they cannot afford to live in town. .
The urban area where the school is located is undergoing rapid industrial and economic changes as more and more foreign companies have set up modern factories and look for well-trained work force. As a result of this economic development there will be better job opportunities and also higher demands from the employers. Our school is trying to reflect these changes in its curriculum, by adapting its courses to allow the students to be better prepared for the demands of the emerging job market.
Our role in the project will be to carry out an investigation into the origin of discoveries in Math and Physics, how the Greeks refined and expanded the subject matter of these two sciences, how the ancient knowledge was preserved and developed by later scientists to make the move towards a rational understanding of the natural world.
Last but not least, we will try to show how, from ancient times, through the Middle Ages, new mathematical developments, interacting with new scientific discoveries were made at an increasing pace that continues through the present day in all European countries.

ReplyDeleteThe number of teachers and students appears in other part of the application form. It isn't necessary to include it here. But it would be convenient to describe the kind of studies.

ReplyDeleteThe IES Camilo José Cela is a secondary state school which offers compulsory (four years, from 12 to 16) and non-compulsory education or bachillerato (two years, from 16 to 18). Students come from both the rural and urban area of Padron as well as from nearby villages such as Dodro or Rois and Pontecesures (in the Province of Pontevedra).
There are a lot of facilities like laboratories, a computer classroom, an audiovisual classroom, a library, department rooms, a cafeteria an assembly hall, a gymnasium, a sports court and a sports centre (shared with the primary school and the other secondary school nearby). However, there isn’t a school canteen because students and teachers usually have lunch at home. Classes start at 8:45 and finish at 14:25. We only have lessons on Tuesday afternoons, when the cafeteria offers a hot meal, if required.
Groups have been organized into “SUBJECT CLASSROOMS” since 2003, which is still quite an uncommon way of organization in most of the Spanish primary and secondary schools. It consists of setting classrooms according to a particular subject and not to the educational level of the students. Classrooms are being provided with all kinds of material specifically needed for a particular subject and with the latest technological devices.
In the last few years, the Spanish educational system through the local educational administrations has been making an effort to develop the learning of a foreign language through content areas (Content and Language Integrated Learning). At present, there are two groups of students who take Biology in English. Although, in order to facilitate students’ understanding, the Biology teacher can use students’ L1 (Galician language in this case), he mostly teaches his subject matter through English, which helps to develop the students’ linguistic competence in a more natural way.
The economy of Padrón, a village of about 9000 inhabitants, is based mainly on agriculture (peppers, kiwis, flowers are grown), and to a lesser extent on other industries (wood, tinned food, aluminium), tourism (Saint James’s Portuguese Way crosses the village) and trade, thanks to its location at a crossroads. Every Sunday a popular open air market is held, full of typical products, which help to raise the economy of the village. Even though this is not a very wealthy area, and despite the current economical crisis, there aren’t too many problems of poverty or social exclusion, mainly because of the supporting role played by the family.
There are very few immigrant students, less than 10%, who face very few problems since the vast majority come from a Spanish-speaking countries, which makes it easier for them to integrate and make friends.
Our role in the project will be to study the influence of Greek and Roman mythology in all the artistic activities (music, literature, sculpture, painting, ceramic…) in order to outline a kind of history of mythology. We’ll try to find examples in most of European countries. Besides, we are going to demonstrate the value Romans gave to means of communication, especially roads, by drawing a big European map of Roman roads.

ReplyDeleteThe ‘Istituto Tecnico Statale’ “Aterno” of Pescara is located in an area called Portanuova of Pescara, the biggest town in the region of Abruzzo, in the centre of Italy, with more than 100.000 inhabitants. This town has an economy based on the tertiary: summer tourism, trade and commerce, services of different types and has got three university faculties, Foreign Languages, Architecture and Economy, which hosts thousands of students. There is an Airport, a Railway Station, a Fishing harbour and a Touristic harbour.
Up to now, we have no serious economic problems neither a strong unemployment. In the last years there have been an increase in emigrants, coming from Eastern Europe and Northern Africa.
The institute works with pupils coming from a medium social class and they don't have particular personal difficulties or family problems and don’t create problems apart from sporadic cases, and we have just a few immigrant pupils.
The scholastic building is in two linking blocks, it has a gym for gymnastics and an outdoor sport ground for football and open air activities, some computer labs and one is a language lab, two video labs, a chemical lab, a planetary, an “Aula Magna” for general meetings, a library and a bar for the students.
The Institute offers three study courses to its students: Computer Programming, Tourism and Accountancy lessons.
At the moment about 500 students are attending the institute and about 90 people are working here as teachers or members of the staff.
The students attend courses for 5 years and afterwards got a diploma the last year they can enter any university faculty with it. The lessons are in the morning, from 8,20 to 13,30 p.m., in the afternoon there are extracurricular courses to help students, language courses, computer courses, updating courses for teachers and sport activities.
Our first part in the project will be to investigate on the role Latin played in European Languages from the Roman Period to Modern Age.
The second part will be to investigate on the influence of Roman Art in Europe.

Our school is in the well-known city Istanbul. Istanbul which is historically also known as Byzantium or Constantinople is the largest city in Turkey and fifth largest city proper in the world with a population of approximately 15 million. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). We think that this feature will play a great role in the subject of our project.The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
ReplyDelete"Kandilli Kız Anadolu Lisesi",which is situated on one of the most beautiful hill by Bosphorus,was built with the order of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz for his sister Adile Sultan as a palace during 1860s.
By the will of Adile Sultan, after her death, the palace was turned into a girls school. When it was opened in 1916 in the name “Adile Sultan İnas Mekteb-i Sultanisi”, it was the second girls school in Turkey.
This beautiful and fantastic palace was destructed with a fire on 7th March 1986 and the school was moved into its new building. The palace is being used as a culture and congress center after the restoration and the presence of the palace is a great adventure for our school.
In 2008 our school buildings were modernized with a restoration and now two buildings are completely new.
In the education year of 2008-2009 our school has been turned into “anatolian high school” These schools in Turkey aim to prepare students for higher education and to give English-based education and consists of chosen students with a test called SBS. Our school is listed as the first girls anatolian high school in Turkey since the others are mixed.
In the school there are 16 classrooms with 630 students between the ages 14-18. English is the main focus in the school and there are science, maths and social science departments.
In addition to two school buildings there is a dormitory with 106 students who come from different parts of Turkey. There is a principal, 4 principal assistants, 46 teachers and 13 staff.
In the school one can find a wide range of possibilities for social, cultural and sportive activities such as sport and conference hall, a playground, music and art rooms, language club, a great library, physics, chemistry, biology and IT labs.
Kandilli Girls Anatolian High School is one of the most popular and well-known school in Turkey with its great history and fantastic view by Bosphorus.
